Although still very much a work in progress, I’m glad to say that we’ve got a new church website at Calvin. You can check it out at calvinpca.org. You’ll notice some similarities with this site.

I’ve been on a family vacation to North Carolina’s Outer Banks the last week. You can see photos in our family section. I’ll get back to posting soon!
The Dangerous Book for Boys
September 11, 2007 | 3 Comments
I have been very grateful for the numerous gifts and cards and congratulations upon the birth of our son on August 24th. Of all the gifts, however, only one was for both son and father - and it is this gift for which I am most glad.
The gift was the book, The Dangerous Book for Boys, by Con Iggulden. The opening paragraphs states:
In this age of video games and cell phones, there must still be a place for knots, tree houses, and stories of incredible courage. The one thing that we always say about childhood is that we seemed to have more time back then. This book will help you recapture those Sunday afternoons and long summers - because they’re still long if you know how to look at them.
The book is essentially a collection of all sorts of things every young boy should know. The first chapter gives you essential gear for boys - swiss army knife, compass, handkerchief, box of matches, a shooter (for marbles), needle and thread, pencil and paper, small flashlight, magnifying glass, band-aids, and fishhooks.
Other chapters detail how to make a battery, how to play stickball, juggling, secret inks, hunting and cooking a rabbit, Latin phrases every boy should know, making a go-cart, navigation, and there’s even a chapter on girls.
For a father who spends too much time in front of a computer, and for a son who hopefully won’t, this book is truly a great gift. Thanks Dawn!

The Lowdown

Welcome to the “Lowdown,” your periodic report on all that’s interesting on the internet (at least interesting to me). Here you’ll find a little something for just about everyone. Enjoy.
Listen to an absolutely fascinating NPR “Fresh Air” interview with Alice Cooper. His father was a pastor and he’s returned to the Christian faith he knew growing up.
Agree or disagree with Paste Magazine’s list of the 100 best living songwriters.
Read about the kind of baseball game that hasn’t happened for 110 years - a 30 run route by Texas over Baltimore.
Watch Marc Driscol, pastor Mars Hill Church, Seattle, speak about The Supremacy of Christ and the Church - a passionate plea for Biblical orthodoxy, doctrinal truth, and the exaltation of Jesus Christ - essential aspects of church growth.
Read about the gaping hole in the universe that scientists have recently found.
Search for the hole yourself with Google Earth’s new feature - Google Sky, which allows you to zoom in and explore the sky.
Better yet, book a flight to space with Virgin Galactic and search from there. Only $200,000. Don’t think space-flight is for you? Watch the promotional video which just may change your mind.
Read a pastor’s thoughts on politics, poverty and Christianity. A refreshing perspective that acknowledges that the issues aren’t always as simple as many Christians think.
Read about Maxim magazine’s article on how to pick up women in church.
