God’s Call Comes by Cellphone
July 25, 2007
Last year, the LA Times wrote an interesting article on how the church is using technology to grow. The title of the article is, God’s Call Comes by Cellphone. It is a very interesting article about how things like “online worship” can help a church grow. And to think, God’s church used to grow through things like preaching, prayer, regular observance of the sacraments, suffering, etc. How outdated.

Got something to say?

I love the stuff (ESV on MP3, SermonAudio on the iPod, dead pastors still speaking on the Internet), but none of it is worship. I can’t see the ‘gatherings’ of Matt 18:20, Acts 4:30-32, and Acts 13:44-45 as electronic links. And who will be jealous of our assembly (Acts 13:44-45) when we you can’t even tell we are together? Eating a Twinkie while listening to Spurgeon on radio isn’t Word and Sacrement.
Obviously, I’m not opposed to technology as an aid to spiritual growth and learning, or I wouldn’t have this blog. You’re right Satch, we can’t abandon biblical principles of “being” the church just because new methods come along. So often, when biblical models of evangelism and growth are replaced by marketing methods that guarantee results, this also signifies a radical shift in a church’s theological position. The sovereign God who acts according to his Word, becomes an impotent, outdated God, who just doesn’t understand the modern times.
